Objectives

Targets to be achieved during the operating period of the network

Each workshop has a target outcome:

– The first workshop will result in a white paper summarizing the potential institutional models discussed by the participants. Our ambition is that the document can serve as a resource for the network members in developing further institutional support at their home universities / research institutions.

– The second workshop will result in a book titled Writing Environmental Histories of the North. The book will be an edited collection of articles originally presented and discussed at the workshop.

– The third workshop will result in a grant application for a joint Nordic PhD course in environmental history.

– The fourth workshop will identify future collaborate environmental history projects and grant proposals to extend the joint group efforts beyond the Nordforsk funding period.

In addition to the workshop outcomes, the network will help bring together environmental historians who are currently isolated in institutions with no other researchers in the same field.

Visions for continued co-operation after the grant period

As the plan describing collaborative activities demonstrates, we aim to systematically work on activities that stretch beyond the grant period. We envision three major areas of continued cooperation:

– maintain a network for peer mentoring and advice for institutionalization through the network website

– offer a collaborate Nordic PhD course in environmental history using the grant application prepared through the third workshop

– develop transnational research projects leading to international publications, particularly through the discussion of the fourth workshop
